Updated on March 7, 2014
Perfectionism is undoubtedly an admirable personality feature but care must be taken in not going overboard with it. Stressing ourselves out to attain perfection is not an answer to the problems.Everything done with balance is what matters most.

The very few questions usually pop up in our minds when we hear the word “perfectionism” are that what exactly it is? How perfectionism is attained and how a perfectionist can always make sure that the work or thing that he has done is up to the required mark or standards. Another foremost thing with regard to being perfect is that whether it is good, healthy for a person, or it can hurt in a bad way to those who are always trying to achieve perfection in every step and in every case.

PERFECTIONISM, A PERSONALITY FACTOR:

Perfectionism is one of the personality factors and the individuals who try to ensure that whatever work they do should be with a flawless output are the perfectionists. People like these, demand the best of the best not from themselves only but from others as well. For them the real sense of pleasure and satisfaction is achieved when their desired objective is acquired in the most outstanding and is exemplary in nature.

PERFECTIONISM,HEALTHY OR NOT?

Whether perfectionism is healthy for an individual or not is a significant query. On observation, if a certain balanced manner is attained in the achievement of any task then it is considered as positive. It also ensures the high personal standards of a person .For good learning experiences and intellectual growth the importance of perfectionism cannot be denied. The exploration of an individual‘s true talents is also possible for a perfectionist. It benefits a person in setting realistic and reachable goals and once attained it develops the greater sense of self-esteem, and brings much confidence, helping in the increase of the productivity levels.

OBSESSION WITH PERFECTIONISM CAN BE BAD:

However, too much obsession with perfectionism can be very damaging for a personality. It leads to constant stress, anxiety, procrastination and may also result in frustration most of the times. Not only this, the perfectionists live under the constant state of fear of rejection or disapproval, hence they tend to become more self critical and put intense pressure on themselves as well the others involved. Sometimes they fail to realize the fact that their demands tend to become unrealistic which ultimately raises up the emotional stress levels.

SEEKING BALANCE IS IMPORTANT:

The bottom line for a healthy perfectionist attitude is to establish proper balance and flexibility between the demands, desires as well their practical implications. Nothing can be attained if a certain attitude becomes too obsessive and becomes a negative feature. A certain degree of distinction must be established between realistic and unrealistic.

Perfectionism is indeed an admirable trait, the pursuit of excellence is always appreciable but the behavioral patterns should be watched and one must not go over board in the realization of dreams and desires.
